Congratulations to the Recipients of the 2023-2024 Microgrants!
20 educators and community partners across four counties and five school districts received grant funding from the STEM Hub to support STEM-related projects and initiatives in the Gorge! This year’s microgrants are estimated to impact over 4,330 students and 148 classrooms/teachers.
⭐ Black History Month: Black History Month is a celebration of Black/African Americans' contributions to history, culture, and society in the U.S. Below are some resources from the Oregon Department of Education to engage diverse voices, contributions, and perspectives in science education:
Helping Students Make Sense of the World- Chapter 3, Towards More Equitable Learning in Science, focuses on 3 Principles for expanding meaningful teaching and learning opportunities.
STEM Teaching Tool - This practice brief explores how educational leaders can work with communities to support and build upon the cultures and histories of students and their families.
The History Makers - ScienceMakers have made advances in scientific research and include chemists, engineers, and physicists, as well as science education administrators.

📣Educator Spotlight - Highlighting Achievements of Local Educators
A recent article in Gorge News highlighted Leona Egeland's instrumental role in the Dufur Career Technical Education (CTE) program, emphasizing her dedication to guiding students towards their career aspirations. As the Dufur CTE coordinator, Egeland plays a pivotal role in facilitating hands-on learning experiences and forging partnerships with local businesses to provide diverse vocational training opportunities for students. Her commitment to personalized career guidance and industry-relevant skills development is evident in the program's emphasis on empowering students to explore various career paths aligned with their interests and talents
Egeland shares, "“It is my belief that any CTE program should strive to help students discover their natural giftings, talents and aptitudes, while at the same time reinforcing that fulfillment in your personal and professional life not only comes from using your naturals giftings in your work, but fulfillment is also obtained through taking pride in a job well done.”
🔬Nominate a Special Science Teacher for an OSTA Award
The Oregon Science Teacher Association (OSTA) is accepting nominations for several awards. Look around you; look at the colleagues in your school, district, and region. Which ones are the hardest working, the most passionate, and the most skilled at exciting students about science and the process of scientific discovery? Which ones contribute most to the profession of science teaching?
⚙2024 Digital Rube Goldberg Machine Minecraft Contest
The 2024 Digital Rube Goldberg Machine Contest is a STEAM competition where students (including K-12 and collegiate) compete with machines that they have imagined, designed in Minecraft Education Edition, and created in a fun and competitive forum.
This year’s Digital Rube Goldberg Machine Contest is being offered in Minecraft Education Edition FREE for all teams!
🚌Oregon Parks Forever - Field Trip Grants for 3rd-5th Grade Classes
Oregon Parks Forever has funds available to pay the transportation costs for field trips for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes to any park or forest in Oregon! Known as the Ticket2Ride Program, schools and organizations are invited to apply - it takes just a few moments to apply!
STEM Teaching Tools are short briefs co-written by educators and researchers designed to bring together ideas and resources to address common challenges as educators adopt the new vision for science education in the NRC Framework and resulting in Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

👨🚀3-2-1 LIFTOFF! NASA Astronaut Col. Jeffrey Williams Inspires the Gorge!
The Gorge Technology Alliance presents an evening with NASA Astronaut Col. Jeffrey Williams, who has spent 534 days on the International Space Station, and over 33 hours spacewalking! He is also a photographer, and will take us on a journey to understand what life is like in space.

💰High School Seniors: The GTA's 2024 Corwin Hardham Memorial Scholarship is Accepting Applications through March 8th!
Gorge High School Seniors from Hood River, Wasco, Sherman, Skamania, and Klickitat Counties who are graduating from high school, home school, or receiving a GED in the spring/summer and are pursuing post-secondary degrees in STEM fields are welcome to apply.
🎓WA High School Students: Career & Technical Scholarship (CTS)
The CTS provides up to $1,500 per quarter for apprenticeship, certificate, or associate degree programs in STEM, health care, and the trades. Also see the The Rural Jobs Initiative (RJI) aspect of the scholarship (no additional application is required). Applications for Fall open March 5th.Learn More

Looking to introduce problem solving, language, and motor skills to your 1-8 year olds?Fruit Loops Art Center in Hood River is offering a weekly sensory lab program that is a perfect start for STEM learning for young ages.
